Perhaps I should have known this, perhaps everyone else does, but I didn’t know until I read it recently that when Georg Ludwig of Hanover became King George I of England, on account of being Queen Anne’s closest Protestant relative, the 1701 Act of Settlement prevented more than fifty Roman Catholics who were more closely related to her from ascending the throne.
